4 - The Phantom Lover

Kalinka a Russian artist is a very nice person. Hannibal tries to seduce her but she loves another unknown person called the "Phantom Lover".
Lili and Jody tries to get rid of her because they want Hannibal to themselves.
There are troubles to come.

Outside Kalinka's house

Enter the house. You can't use the stairs.

Ask Homunculus to help you. Use him on the handle on top of the stairs.

He flies up and pulls the handle and you can walk upstairs.

You enter the garden.

At the table under the parasol, there is a flower pot.

Look at it. You'll hear Hannibal propose to Kalinka but she refuses.

Walk upstairs to the left of the fountain and go to the door.

The pane is broken. Look at it and you'll see Lili and Jody throwing a stone and breaking the pane.

They can do anything to hurt Kalinka to get Hannibal back.

Look at the letterbox to the left of the door. Pick up the peacock feathers.

Open the door and enter.

Look at everything to get clues.

Kalinka's apartment

Look to the right of the door (at the inside). Read the note. Kalinka has got some missions. A feather for the twins, a strong leather-strap for Hannibal and a mask for Frank. It is up to you to do it now.

You have already found the feathers. Go to the back room with the statues. Find the one of Lili and Jody.

Put the feathers on her dress. You'll hear them talk about setting a trap for Kalinka. No nice girls.

Now you must make a leather-strap for Hannibal.

At the table there four different machines. A sewing machine, a cutting machine, a hole-punching machine and a pattern machine. Above the cutting-machine is a roll with some bolts of leather. Use the bottom bolt to get some hard leather. It is automatically used on the cutting-machine and you get Strong leather.

Use it on the hole-punching machine and you'll get a Strong leather strap.

Pick it up.

Go to the back room and use the leather strap on the statue of Hannibal.

You'll hear Hannibal getting mad because of Kalinka refusing him. Kalinka is crying because Hannibal has ruined her herbs. They are all picked at different seasons and she doesn't know how to journey in time to replace them.

Now you must make a mask for Frank.

Look at the table. There is an instruction. You need a lot of things. Soft leather, Grille, Laces, Gauze, Soft tissue and herb balm.
You know where to find the leather but you must go looking for the other things. Go toward the stairs. There is a chest of drawers. Examine them. Take the Grill and the shoelaces.

Start making the mask.

Take leather from the middle bolt. It is automatically cut to give you soft leather.

Use the Soft leather on the pattern-machine, (the leftmost one,) to get pieces of soft leather. Then use them on the hole-punching machine to get Pieces of soft leather with holes.

Use the pieces with hole on the sewing machine and it will start sewing.
Put the grill and the laces on the machine.
Pick up the Mask

At the table lies a note from Theodore. Read it. It gives you another mission. You have to mend the fountain in the garden. It has to wait a bit, though.

You must find Gauze, Soft tissue and Herb balm.

Find the bathroom behind the red curtain in the living room. The one with a bathtub not the toilet in the statue room.

Open the drawer below the mirror and take Gauze and Soft tissue.

Now only Herb balm is missing.

Go upstairs and through the curtain into her bedroom.

Continue into the next room. There is a big loom. Look at it.

You'll hear Kalinka talk about a key to her secret garden.

Look at the loom again to get a close-up.

There is a four-folded piece of cloth. Use each corner of it to open it, and then take the silver moon from the bird. It is the key to the secret garden.

When you pass her bedroom on your way out, take a look at her jewelry box and you'll hear about her Russian relatives.

Return to the living room.
Under the stairs hangs a blue curtain. Enter there, and you'll be in a room that looks like something between a kitchen and a laboratory. There is a row of small cabinets, Open the door under the strange apparatus and take a flour-bag.

To the left there is a big grandfather clock.
Look at it, and you'll see a crescent shaped hole.
Use the silver moon on the hole and a passage will open.

Enter it and you have found the secret garden.

The secret garden

You'll hear Mephisto talk about traveling in time to pick different herbs but that you first have to find something invisible.

When you regain control you are standing beside a small table in the corner, and your cursor shows, that you should pick up a leaf,

When you do, the leaf is put in a box at the bottom left of the screen. You shall evidently pick up three more leafs but they should be picked at different seasons.

I the opposite corner is a garden table. On it there are some astrological symbols.

They are the signs for the twelve constellations in the Milky way. Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpios, Arcitenens, Caper, Amphora, Pisces.

There are also four pictures of the same tree, painted at different seasons.

First you have to find something invisible. Often invisible things are under water. In the garden, you have already noticed, there is a fountain.

Outside Kalinka's house

Return to the kitchen and exit the apartment into the garden. Go to the fountain.
It is a statue of Atlas carrying the world on his shoulders. The world is a bowl of water.

Look in it. You can't see the bottom because the sky is mirrored on the surface. You need to make it less clear.

Use the flour-bag on the water. The flour gathers at the bottom and you can see the pattern. There are four signs. Scorpios, Pisces, Taurus and Leo. Mephisto spoke about traveling in time to different seasons.

These four represent different seasons. Scorpios, fall, Pisces, winter, Taurus, spring and Leo, summer. Note down the signs.

The secret garden

Return to the kitchen and enter the secret garden.
Press the four signs in the order they were shown.
Then press one of the trees. Start with Summer, The light green tree in the upper left quadrant.

You'll see Kalinka singing for her unborn child.
Go to the table in the corner and take a leaf. Then return to the garden table and press the autumn tree, the one in the upper right quadrant.
You'll see Kalinka with a man. He asks her never to tell the name of the child's father.

Pick up leaf number 3

Then press the winter-tree in the lower right quadrant.
Now you'll see Kalinka with her newborn child.

Pick the forth and last leaf.

Now you'll see Mephisto telling Faust that he has 15 minutes to fix what is broken before Theodore or the Twins arrive.

At the same time a timeline is shown at the top of the screen.
The twins have hidden the necklace so that Theodore is bound to find it.
Remember that you earlier have seen that Theodore should mend the fountain, perhaps they have put the necklace there.
To get back to the right time you must press the spring-tree, in the lower left quadrant.

Outside Kalinka's house

Leave the secret garden and go through the kitchen to the fountain.
The fountain doesn't work. Look at the crank to the left of the glass bowl. A nail is stopping the movement. Get the nail.

Use the crank to get the wheel moving.

If you want to know how to empty the bowl look at Atlas's head and click at the small handle. The water is running through his mouth.

Look at the wheel-tray and you can pick up the necklace.

Kalinka's Apartment

Now you must prepare the herb balm.

Go to the chemistry set in the kitchen. Remove the cork from the flask, then use the four leafs on the flask to put them into it. At last put the cork back.

Use the matches to light the gas-burner. You may have to do it several times. Wait until the green fluid is in the small container to the right. If there isn't enough fluid you must light the burner again.

Take the Herb Balm. You cannot take it until you have got enough.

In the kitchen there is a device to complete the mask. Use the mask on the box.

Use the gauze, the herb balm and at last the soft tissue on the box. The mask is finished. Take it.

Go to the room with the statues and use the mask on the statue of Frank.

Frank tells you about the wedding ring. Frank is the Phantom Lover and the father of the child. But where is the ring?
Go to Kalinka's bedroom and then to her study.
In a corner there is a model of a Russian house.
Use the matches on the candle to light it.

An Angel is coming out from the house. Click at the candle while the angel is outside. Look at it in close-up and take the ring.

You'll see Mephisto and Theodore talking in the garden.

Theodore's library

You'll be transferred to Theodore's house.

Go through the door into the library and walk up the stairs. Turn to the right and walk to the ladder.

Click at the books on the shelf to the left of the ladder to open a secret panel.

As you can see the first word of every title is written in gold.
Pick up all the books.

Put the books back from left to right so that the golden words makes the sentence: "I Theodore Lost Hope In 1917 And Signed A Contract With Mephisto."
